Picture Day

Picture Day is TABB’s signature community celebration, an evening built around Black self-styling, professional photography, and the radical act of being seen on your own terms. Presented in collaboration with Twiga Collective for Black History Month 2025, the event invited guests to choose a fashion house and arrive prepared to be seen. This event was conceived to serve two primary purposes. Firstly it was a successful attempt to demystify the arts. TABB invited members of the black community in east coast Newfoundland, to engage in an evening of creativity. An informal opportunity to be on a set without the pressure of performing. Three fashion houses anchored the evening: Afrocentric Traditional, celebrating African textiles and colour; Afro Dandyism, precision tailoring and bold silhouette; and Cowboys; reimagined western, leather, drama, grit, and glamour. Seven Black creatives were on-site throughout the evening: photographers, a painter, cinematographers, hair and makeup artists, a henna artist, and a DJ. At the close of the evening, a Theme Superstar Award was presented for each fashion house.

Picture Day generated measurable economic outcomes for Black creatives. There was reported increase in professional client bookings for the photographers in the weeks following the event. The henna artist earned significant direct revenue on the night. Multiple models made professional connections they credited to the event.

What made it even more special was seeing photographers capturing it all and watching young Black people in a small community like St. John’s coming together, creating space, and celebrating each other. It was powerful to witness.
